skillet of roasted radishes

I first fell in love with this idea while visiting The Square Grouper in the Florida Keys, where they had a version of baked goat cheese served with roasted beets on the menu. The dish was so simple but memorable that when I got home, I started thinking about how delicious it might be with roasted radishes instead. Turns out the swap was a winner—roasting radishes mellows their bite and brings out a subtle sweetness that pairs perfectly with warm, creamy goat cheese. Finished with a few simple toppings, this easy 10-ingredient appetizer feels a little special but comes together with minimal effort.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Roasting radishes transforms their flavor. Once a radish is roasted, it loses that peppery bite. The natural sugars in the radishes begin to caramelize in the oven, giving them a milder, slightly sweet, almost buttery flavor.
  • Simple Ingredients. This recipe calls for 10 simple ingredients, most of which you probably have in your pantry already.
  • Great year round. It is nice to have a fresh bright vegetable app even in the winter months. This recipe is perfect for that.
  • Ready in under 30 minutes. Since this recipe is one skillet, its easy to roast everything all together and comes out of the oven quick.
  • Great for entertaining. Since the goat cheese and the radishes roast together in a skillet, it’s easy to simply serve and your guests can pick at it.

Ingredients

  • Radishes: The radishes get a buttery, sweet flavor when roasted. Perfect contrast to the goat cheese.
  • Olive oil: Using a good olive oil here is key. Helps add additional flavor.
  • Balsamic: Balsamic vinegar adds a nice tangy acidity that balances so nicely.
  • Garlic: I believe you can never have enough garlic! The garlic in the dressing for this adds an additional layer of aromatics
  • Dijon mustard: Dijon mustard adds tang, depth, and a subtle sharpness to a recipe.
  • Balsamic glaze: Similar to balsamic, this more concentrated balsamic is the perfect finish to this appetizer.
  • Scallions: This dish is topped with scallions at the end to give a fresh brightened finish.
  • Goat Cheese: Goat cheese adds creamy richness and a bright tangy flavor.
  • Thyme: Thyme and goat cheese go so well together.
  • Breadcrumbs: Coating the goat cheese in breadcrumbs adds a nice crunch and additional flavor.

4. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roast radishes for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove from oven and move radishes over to make room for the goat cheese patties. Bake for another 10-12 minutes. Top with chopped scallions and a drizzle of balsmaic glaze.

Expert Tips

  • Use a cast iron skillet: Cast iron skillets get super hot and are great for holding heat well. This makes them excellent for heat retention and even cooking which lets the radishes develop a deep, flavorful sear.
  • Use a preseasoned breadcrumb: Using an Italian breadcrumb adds extra flavor and saves time.
Use good-quality goat cheese: Using a good quality goat cheese really brings that tangy, creamy flavor to the recipe
Explore other cheeses: This recipe would also be delicious with a feta or another cheese that holds it shape nicely and has a sharp quality.

Variations

  • Make a honey balsamic dressing or drizzle with honey at the end for a slightly sweeter version of this recipe.
  • Include garlic cloves. Since everything roasts together in a skillet, you can easily add garlic cloves to roast as well. Roasted garlic adds a rich nutty flavor that would pair very nicely with the goat cheese and roasted radishes.
  • Top with toasted nuts. To add a bit of a crunch and additional flavor and texture, add a chopped walnut or almond before serving.
  • Serve with crusty bread. Spread a little of that goat cheese on crusty bread and top with a few radishes for a great side or snack idea. Great for leftovers too!
  • Serve with arugula or greens. The roasted radishes and creamy goat cheese would be great adds to salad.

Storage

This is best served hot and fresh, but radishes and goat cheese hold up nicely stored in a airtight container in the fridge. When ready to reheat. Preheat oven to 400ºF and reheat in a skillet until its desired temperature.

FAQs

Can you really roast radishes?

Yes, once a radish is roasted, it loses that peppery bite. The natural sugars in the radishes begin to caramelize in the oven, giving them a milder, slightly sweet, almost buttery flavor.

Do roasted radishes taste like potatoes?

Yes, roasted radishes can taste surprisingly similar to potatoes, though they’re a little lighter and slightly peppery.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Yes—you can mostly make roasted radishes with goat cheese ahead of time, but it’s best to keep a few components separate so everything tastes fresh when you serve it. Keep the dressing separate, and when ready to serve, coat radishes and add to skillet. You can also make the goat cheese ahead of time and coat in breadcrumbs. Add during baking.

Can I make this dairy-free?

I would suggest just roasting the radishes and eliminate the goat cheese component of this recipe.
