Level up your sushi by shaping them into hearts during the rolling process. This is such a recipe for Valentine’s Day, date night or really any occasion!

The Deets:
Super cute and fun way to level up Valentine’s this year- these are my heart shaped sushi rolls using Acme Sesame Crusted Smoked Ahi Tuna. I made a chopped spicy sesame tuna, pickled radish, avocado and cucumber for filling, and then topped with more slices of tuna. Take these to the next level but shaping them into half of a heart during the rolling process. When you slice them into pieces, you’ll see that 2 slices make a heart. Acme Sesame Tuna is the easiest way to get wild caught ahi tuna at home and it’s great on its own, or turned into a roll like these. Happy Valentine’s!

Spicy Tuna Heart Shaped Sushi Rolls
Equipment
- Bamboo sushi mat
Ingredients
The spicy tuna:
- 1 Package of Acme Sesame Crusted Tuna
- 1 tsp Kewpie mayo
- 1/2 tsp Sweet chili sauce
- 1/2 tsp Sriracha
- 1/2 tsp Sesame oil
- Furikake
- 1 tbsp Chopped chives
Sushi rice:
- 2 cups Uncooked sushi rice
- 3 cups Water
- 1 tbsp Vegetable oil
- 1/3 cup Rice wine vinegar
- 1/8 cup White sugar
- 1 tsp Salt
- Drizzle of sesame oil
The rest:
- 1 Package of Acme Sesame Crusted Tuna for topping
- 2 Pieces of nori
- 1 Avocado, cut into thin slices
- 1 Small cucumber, sliced into strips
- Pickled radish (optional)
- Soy sauce to dipping
- Wasabi for serving
- Ginger for serving
Instructions
- Make rice: Rinse rice in cold water until it runs clear. Combine rice and water in a pot and cook on medium heat until water comes to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook for about 20 min or until the water is absorbed. Meanwhile combine vinegar, sugar and oil in a pot on low heat and stir until sugar is dissolved. Allow to cool and then add to rice. Stir until combined.
- Make spicy tuna filling: Finely chop 1 pack of Acme Sesame crusted tuna and add to a bowl. Add other spicy tuna ingredients and mix until combined.
- Make sushi rolls: Center 1 nori sheet on a bamboo sushi mat. Use wet hands to spread a thin layer of rice on top. One rice has been added, flip nori over (the rice side is now facing down on the bamboo).
- Add about 2 tbsp of the spicy tuna mixture to the center of the roll. The tuna should form a column in the center. Place slices of avocado, cucumber and radish (if using) to the center on top of the tuna.
- Now it is time to roll: Roll the bamboo mat using a press and release forward motion to create the sushi roll. To create the heart shape, place the bamboo mat over the sushi roll. Press down on one side using your palms and using your fingers to keep the other side in place. This creates a half heart shape.
- Add slices of Acme Sesame Crusted Tuna overtop the entire roll.
- Cutting the roll: I suggest adding a layer of cling wrap overtop of the roll to help with smooth cuts. Using a sharp knife dipped in water, slice the roll in the center. Dipping your knife in water between cuts, cut the ends of the roll, and then cut it into fourths, then eighths.
- Combine 2 pieces together to make a full heart. Serve with soy sauce, ginger and wasabi. Enjoy!
